Lanikai Beach

‘Lanikai’ means “heavenly sea,” and is known for its clear, turquoise water and expanse of soft white sand. This is one of the island’s best beaches for tranquil waters and swimming.

Lanikai beach is on Oahu's southeastern coast, and has been ranked as one of the world's most beautiful beaches, along with neighboring Kailua Beach. The aqua waters, smooth white sands and gently swaying palm trees are like heaven.

The two small islands sitting offshore are the Mokuluas, and are protected bird sanctuaries. North Mokulua is open to the public during the day and accessible by kayak, making for a perfect day trip.

You might want to kayak out to the offshore Mokulua Islands. Lanikai Beach has the best view of these twin islands, which are recognized worldwide. The Mokulua Islands are about a half mile off the shore of Lanikai. The islands are home to birds such as the I`wa, and activities such as surfing, kayaking, snorkeling and paddling are popular. Only Moku Nui, seen on the left as you face the islands from Lanikai Beach, is open for landing. Visitors are restricted to the beach to protect seabird nests. This island has an excellent beach, a double mountain, and amazing offshore views. Its somewhat smaller twin island, Moku Iki, is beautiful as well but is a bird sanctuary and landing on the island is not allowed.

Be careful of the Portugese Man-of-War (jellyfish) and stinging limu (seaweed) especially from June through September. Always monitor ocean conditions closely. Obey all postings and warning signs. >Read more about Lanikai Beach...
